Welcome to another edition of Turnbuckle Talk! Today we are featuring a hula hooping, balloon hat and animal making, San Francisco treat and up and coming wrestler, Phoebe!
Phoebe is based out of the state of Oklahoma, but she has wrestled in Texas and other places as well. We had the pleasure of meeting her in San Antonio when she competed in a women’s tournament for RCW. Although she is very early in her career, she is already laying the foundation for what is sure to be a great career. Learn more about her in this interview that she was nice enough to do with us below.
H/F: At what age did you begin watching wrestling?
Phoebe: I was 8 years old and at that time I was only watching ECW before the Monday night wars.
H/F: When did you know that you wanted to become a wrestler?
Phoebe: I’ve known I always wanted to partake in training to be a wrestler since I was 12. However, that idea was shot down multiple times because I was too busy pleasing everyone’s wishes. Then, one day I decided to go out and find where I could train and I am so glad I did.
H/F: Where did you begin your training and who did you train with?
Phoebe: I trained at Compound Pro Wrestling by Micheal Stierwalt and then once I made my in ring debut I seeked out other trainers who can help me so that I can get all different types of training. One of them was Mitch Baxter, who still helps me to this day when I ask.
H/F: How long have you been in the business?
Phoebe: Surprisingly only 9 months! Believe it or not, haha!
H/F: Who are some of your influences or people that you look up to in the business?
Phoebe: Sabu was my all time favorite wrestler because he would do anything to get a reaction and people always found themselves so invested in him because of his daredevil tactics and fearless attitude. Now that I have met more and more workers over the past few months, I basically look up to anyone who has been in this longer than me, and if I can take anything from them, whether it be advice or a little critique in my ring work, is what makes me appreciate every single wrestler.
H/F: What is your entrance music? Any reason for picking this song?
Phoebe: One of my best friends made me custom entrance music since he is a musician and very talented! Now if I forget my music I usually speak with the sound guy and tell em “Pick anything funky or that I can dance too!” hahaha!
H/F: What is the name of your finishers?
Phoebe: Right now it is the X Factor, but I am working on submissions to help me be more original. I don’t really have any names yet, but I also like to finish with a DDT as I yell at the crowd with my hands in the air! hahaha.
H/F: What have you learned about yourself in your journey of becoming a wrestler?
Phoebe: Wow….I really can be anything or anybody if I just stay straight, be positive, and continue to learn. It is very surreal, but I know I have a good 10 years in the tank so right now I am making the most of each match and always willing to learn.
H/F: What has been your favorite part of your career so far?
Phoebe: I was involved in a triple threat ladder match for the 1st Compound Women’s Championship with Killista and Skylar Slice. I channeled my inner Sabu and really gave it my all. Literally, mind and body because I knew that will be the only time I would be in that position for while. Plus, it helped being in a match with 2 talented women whom I respect, trust, and who love wrestling just as much as I do.
H/F: Who would your dream match be against?
Phoebe: Me and Sabu vs Bull Nakano and RVD!
H/F: Other than the dream match opponent, is there anyone that you haven’t worked with that you would like to one day?
Phoebe: All the women in ROH, SHIMMER, Stardom…you name it haha I admire all the women on the independent scene and I look forward to work with whomever I have the pleasure to.
H/F: What are some of your goals for 2017?
Phoebe: To wrestle at least 30 new girls I have never worked before and to come up with a finisher that no one else uses.
H/F: Favorite cheat meal? Type of music? Type of movies?
Phoebe: I am pescatarian (meaning I do not eat meat, chicken or any of the products like butter, ice cream etc., but I still eat fish) Right now I am weaving out fish since I rarely eat it anyways, but a cheat meal for me would like “YES, I will order dessert!” hahaha. I love funky music and good ole rock n roll. Whenever I’m at a party I like to put on some hip hop and just dance with it. I have a lot of friends who are musicians and play locally and try to get there name out there. Just like me with my wrestling. So I go out and support them in the dingy bars or any venue that they are at. Movies: I love action! I like to see things blow up and people fighting and all the chaos hahaha and superhero movies. Love them as well!
H/F: What is something that not many people know about you?
Phoebe: I’m an open book, very talkative and open to any conversations….Wait…I’m afraid of the dark! I don’t think people know that haha.
H/F: Favorite place that you have wrestled so far?
Phoebe: That triple threat ladder match back in August at Compound Pro in Tulsa, OK. We all were so scared and nervous, but once we were out there we just lived in that moment.
H/F: Bucket list of places you want to wrestle?
Phoebe: JAPAN! That is my ultimate goal. I am working to better myself as a performer and wrestler to get to Japan.
H/F: What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t wrestling?
Phoebe: I enjoy making balloon hats and animals (part of my real life job), hula hooping, and going to see live music around town.
H/F: Finish this statement, if I wasn’t involved in wrestling, I would be doing…
Phoebe: Stilt walking and entertaining all the lovely people who come to Margaritaville!
H/F: Any words for your fans?
Phoebe: Stay tuned, I’ve only just begun!
H/F: Any last words that you would like to add?
Phoebe: Don’t think what could be, because you might regret it if you don’t try!
