Heel/Face Predictions: Backlash

The first SmackDown Live pay per view is set to take place tomorrow night from Richmond, Virginia at the Richmond Coliseum. Two new championships will be awarded as the first ever women’s and tag team champions will be crowned when the night is over. Also, the Intercontinental and WWE World Heavyweight titles will be defended as Dolph Ziggler and AJ Styles look to capture gold from The Miz and Dean Ambrose respectively. Below you can find predictions from the Heel/Face Wrestling staff.

6-pack challenge for the SmackDown Live Women’s Title6pack

Six woman battle for the right to be the first Smackdown woman’s champion. Quite a mix of woman here as we have Carmella, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, Natalya, Becky Lynch, and the returning Nikki Bella.

While Carmella and Alexa are climbing the ranks and making names for themselves, I don’t see them winning quite yet, much less as the first SmackDown women’s champion. Noami and Natalya both have the time and have been on the mains shows for some time, but I don’t think they are the ones they are going with or looking at for the near future. I believe it will come down to Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella. While Lynch SHOULD win the belt, I feel they will give it to Nikki as it is her big comeback and a thank you, plus a push to their other show in Total Divas.

Winner and New Woman’s champion: Nikki Bella

-Brandon

I think that it is way too early for Carmella or Alexa Bliss to win this title (although stranger things have happened). The right pick here is to put the belt on Becky Lynch, but for some reason, something tells me that they still want her to chase the belt for a little longer. While Naomi is a solid worker and is back with a new and cool entrance, I don’t think it’s quite her time yet either. That leaves us with Nikki Bella and Natalya. If any one of these women is truly deserving of this belt, let’s be honest, it is Nattie. Nikki carried the title, and some would say the division, for quite some time and an argument for her to be the first SmackDown women’s champion would be a legitimate one. With all of this said, I think the WWE continues to give Nikki more accolades and allows her to become the first ever champion.

Tag Team Tournament conclusion: Hype Bros vs Usos, winner faces Heath Slater & Rhyno
tag

Usos vs Hype Bros: While I KNOW the popular opinion is the Usos, I am going to go against the grain as Ryder and Mojo have been doing well lately. Mojo’s match against Somoa Joe was impressive, so that sways my pick for them to win. Ryder has been in some big matches and even had a belt for a second or two. I am going for Hype Bros regardless of popular thoughts and opinions.

Winner: Hype Bros

Hype a dos vs Slater and Rhyno: It will be a fun match as they are pretty evenly matched teams. Slater and Ryder are the faster and more high flyers, while Mojo and Rhyno are big guys who use their power and strength. I am going to stick with my team and say The Hype Bros win, but with and extra add on that I think that the Slater storyline of trying to get a contract is super entertaining still.

Winner and new tag team champions: Hype Bros

-Brandon

Let me just say I’m a Zach Ryder fan but that doesn’t make me a Hype Bros. fan by default. I think the Mojo character needs work and doesn’t translate well to the main roster. On the other hand, the Usos are stale. They are desperately in need of a reset and I’m not talking about a Shining Stars type reset. Just something to freshen them up… The only reason we are getting this match is due to an injury to Chad Gable. I fully believe that American Alpha was the team originally scheduled to win Smackdown Tag Titles, but I guess we will have to wait for that run. I think we will see the Hype Bros pull this one off and take the win. If I can take a moment to fantasy book this match, I would have the Usos win but have AA come out and take them out and then take their spot in the finals vs Slater/Rhyno. Barring that happening, then I think the Hype bros move on.

Winner: Hype Bros, but Heath Slater & Rhyno win the titles

-Joseph

Heath Slater is getting a huge push on Smackdown right now and I love it. He been so good that he’s parlayed it into a shot at tag team gold. Now the real test comes though. Does the WWE follow all the way through with this push and put the titles on Slater and Rhyno? Or do they fall back into their old ways and give it to the Usos (who presumably beat the Hype Bros) as a safety net? A lot changes have been happening since the brand split: new stories, new chances, new talent. I think they keep moving in that direction and Slater brings the belt home to his 7…5…8…. to all his children.

Winner: Heath Slater & Rhyno

Winner: The Usos and then Heath Slater & Rhyno win the gold.

Intercontinental Championship Match: The Miz (C) vs Dolph Zigglermiz

This should be a fun and entertaining match. Miz has been on a good roll since his rant at Daniel Bryan on Smackdown Live and Dolph always makes his opponents look like a million bucks. This one won’t let you down for a solid, fun match, but the Miz is going to stay champion, for now.

Winner and still IC champ: The Miz

-Brandon

I really can’t figure out what they are trying to do with the Miz. He’s set to blast off into another stratosphere after cutting the promo on Daniel Bryan. They tease it. They use it in video packages. They almost taunt us with it. And then they kill it. But they still want us to believe that the Miz is fiery and full of passion. To his credit, he’s doing the best he can to keep it going. But all the momentum nearly died out after Bryan was removed from the equation.

Enter Dolph Ziggler. The guy who deserves a huge push, and has for years, is also the guy who’s so good that the WWE keeps him free just in case situations like this pop up. Ziggler will fill in for Bryan here, put on a fantastic match and the Miz will go over, looking like a million bucks. The match will be good, the story will be ok and we’ll all forget about it in two months.

Randy Orton vs Bray Wyattrandy

Eh…while I used to LOVE Bray Wyatt and his whole family, the constant losses over and over and over just killed it for me. They build up this huge, very cool story when someone or a team is facing the Wyatts and it always has a message, but the message gets wiped out as they lose and NOTHING changes. No big insights by the person they are fighting or changes to the status quo. New Day dealt with it the best but still. Randy Orton is Orton and no way he loses after his loss to Brock Lesnar.

Winner: Randy Orton

-Brandon

Poor Bray Wyatt. For as talented as he is both inside the ring and on the mic (cutting promos in general), he is being wasted away as a stepping stone for everyone else. Had it not been for interrupting the Rock, he wouldn’t have even appeared on the biggest show of the year, WrestleMania. Pretty unfair treatment for a guy who has been bending over backwards (literally) for a company that won’t seem to do the same for him. There is no way Orton loses here, not two pay per views in a row and especially not after that elbow that he took from Brock at the Summer Slam that caused him to get ten staples in his head. I do think that this match will have some nice spots, but in the end, Randy will take Bray to “Viperville” and pick up the win.

Winner: Randy Orton

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Dean Ambrose (C) vs AJ Stylesdean

While I like both these guys, I am a HUGE fan of Dean Ambrose and I have loved his run as Champion, but I think that AJ Styles is going to win. It is really his time. He has battled Jericho, Cena, reunited with the Bullet Club for awhile and now Ambrose. I think it is his time.

Winner and new champ: AJ Styles

-Brandon

If I can sum up Ambrose’s title run in one word, it would have to be: lackluster. Don’t get me wrong. I am an Ambrose fan, but this title run has just not lived up to what I was expecting from Ambrose. It feels like creative just can’t decide what they want him to be. The comedic champ or the passionate champ. Comedy Ambrose doesn’t work and Passionate Ambrose tends to waver. I just feel like they could have done more with Ambrose. The Ambrose character is in desperate need of a reset too. On the other hand you have AJ Styles. This man as been in my Top 5 for a long time and he doesn’t show signs of falling off. Ever since coming into the WWE, Styles has put on great match after great match. The guy has delivered on this stage and he is doing things others can’t. The title should be on the greatest talent on your roster and right now on Smackdown that is the Phenomenal One. AJ has even made Vince say that he should have signed him 10 years earlier. To make McMahon say he regrets something is HUGE. I’m thinking AJ wins and the with the title off of Ambrose, we get the desperate Ambrose chasing the title again. I want the Ambrose that was chasing after Rollins’ title. That Dean worked and was over with the crowd. So AJ gets the win and a chance to show that he can carry a brand. This will setup a feud with John Cena. AJ Styles is your new Champ!
