Battleground is set to take place tonight from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. It will mark the first televised return of Roman Reigns, who was serving a 30 day suspension after violating the company’s wellness policy. Despite that, Reigns is still in the main event in a triple threat match with fellow former Shield members Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, who won the title last month after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on Rollins, who had just defeated Reigns for that same title. Expect to hear boo’s like you never have before when Reigns makes his entrance. Below you will find the rest of the matches on the card with predictions from Joseph and Jeff here at Heel/Face Wrestling. Those of you wondering where Carlo and Jason’s predictions are? Well, they failed our wellness policy here at Heel/Face and have been suspended from submitting predictions this month. Both are said to be growing out suspension beards and will return to mega boo’s next month with their Summer Slam predictions.
Kickoff show match: The Usos vs Breezango
So this match is supposed to get you hyped and ready for the main card. Yawn. I’m assuming that since both of these teams were drafted to SmackDown Live, they will be starting a feud and this is the beginning of it. The smart move is to put Breezango over and start to build them as a strong team, but since this will be a feud that goes on until November, The Usos should pick up the first win in the batlle.
Winner: The Usos
United States Championship match: Rusev (C) vs Zack Ryder
So WWE has started building Rusev back into the monster he was before. Granted the whole berating Titus O’Neil for being a bad dad and a loser was kinda lame. However, Rusev has been on a tear lately and I’m liking it. Ever sense he lost the U.S. Title to Cena, Rusev has been kinda weak. The whole League of Nations was dumb and wasted his talent. Now he can be showcased for the talent he has. I expect him to be in on the World Title picture in the very near future. I’m a Zack Ryder fan (I still WOO WOO WOO) and I’ve been bitter ever sense the day after WM32. I was there when he won the ladder match. I WOO WOO WOO’d! I witnessed his moment and then I witnessed his subsequent fall down to the bottom of the mid card. Zack is a workhorse, he’s solid in ring, and you can’t tell me he isn’t over with the crowd. Why they keep giving him the Ziggler spots is beyond me. It’s time Ryder got another run on top of the mid card. Be that as it may I believe Rusev wins this one in a blowout. Sorry Zack…Woo Woo Woo.
I, too, witnessed Zack Ryder’s WM32 moment, except I DID NOT Woo, Woo, Woo. In fact, it was quite the opposite to me. Why? Why give this guy the title? Then to have him drop it the very next night only irked me even more. While I do give him his credit, Ryder is one hell of a worker, I think his time to shine is long gone in the WWE and that is not his fault (I’m looking at you creative). The real Rusev is back and looking as strong as ever. It is time to continue this dominance and send Zack back to the back of the line (WOO!) Rusev wins easily.
Intercontinental Championship match: The Miz (C) vs Darren Young
I know depth issues are affecting how WWE books things, but Darren Young as the challenger for the IC Title is a little out there. I don’t get his push and even with Backlund behind him, I don’t see him being over. The Miz on the other hand is a great heel champion. His cockiness and arrogance just makes you want to jump the railing and throat punch him. He has a way of making you hate him even more every time he talks. This rivalry isn’t one I’m on board with. I feel there are more deserving challengers for the IC Title than DY. This match will end and The Miz will walk out with the title. Book it.
Winner: The Miz.
I’m also confused as to why Young is getting this push, but I get it. They hadn’t done a push for him yet and it is now time to do so. With that said, the timing of it is just horrible. With Summer Slam so close, it might have been better to save this push for after that event. The Miz is still a solid worker and is making a great champion. I don’t expect this match to be too long and the current champ will still be called the champ once the bell rings to close out the match.
Winner: The Miz.
Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens
The fight to end the fight. The last battle. One night only. The fact that Owens and Zayn have both been drafted to RAW makes me believe those words are lies. The matches these two put on are stellar and the chemistry between them makes each one feel completely different. I expect this to be the last head to head match up for a while, but definitely not the last. I could gush on and on about how awesome this will be but I’ll just end it here. Zayn wins and Owens seethes with revenge.
Winner: Sami Zayn.
FIGHT FOREVER! Clap clap clapclapclap, FIGHT FOREVER! Yes I could watch these two fight forever as the shirt that they recently put out suggests and I would not get bored with it. Everyone knows that KO is by far my favorite wrestler at the moment (Jay Lethal is a very close second, shout out to Lethal, we need you here buddy!) and of course I pick him to win every time he wrestles. I do not think this is the last fight in this current feud for these two as Joseph suggested. I think it all comes to an end at one epic match at Summer Slam. This one is going to be the match of the night, however, it is going to somehow end in a draw. Maybe a double count out. Get ready for the super crazy awesome finale at Summer Slam folks! Book it!
The New Day vs The Wyatt Family
Let me just say that the fact that The New Day unveiled Booty O’s at the San Diego Comic Con makes it very hard for me to believe that they are losing this match. If this was a title match they wouldn’t move. The Wyatt Family being back gives the WWE another strong faction, but as we’ve seen in the past, they just can’t seem to figure out how to use them. If you’ve noticed anything about the New Day you may have noticed Woods has been growing a beard. In the era of wrestling that I grew up with, this was always a subtle hint at a heel turn. Could the New Day win and crush the Wyatts or could we see Woods take on a darker, more malevolent tone? Who knows? But this one should be a fun one. I expect the New Day to win because creative hates the Wyatts winning.
P.S. Did Bray copy Broken Matt Hardy? Did Hardy copy Bray? Find out next week on Deletion TV.
Winners: The New Day.
The fact that the tag titles are not on the line leads me to Bo-Lieve that the Wyatts are in for a win here. Just as Joseph suggested, I do think Woods is in for a heel turn and it could possibly be tonight at Battleground to set up a rematch for the titles at Summer Slam. In fact, that is what I am going to go with here, heel turn and Wyatts pick up the win thanks to Xavier Woods.
Winner: The Wyatt Family.
Becky Lynch vs Natalya
If you want to hear Becky Lynch’s view of the Women’s Division I encourage you to watch the footage from the SDCC panel. It’s legit and Becky shoots straight fire. Calling for the division to be less catty and more about pursuing gold. Much like the NXT storyline that got them here. This match will hopefully end all the “I attack you now you attack me” BS and give us a good show. Both ladies can work and have great chemistry together. I look for this feud to end here but knowing the WWE it probably won’t. This will probably wrap at Summer Slam. Becky gets the win in a way that makes Nattie want a rematch.
Winner: Becky Lynch.
This will be a very solid match between two of the best wrestlers in the company. The build up to this match has been great and they are just getting started. I do agree with Joseph that a rematch will take place at Summer Slam and then it will end there. However, I have it the other way around. Since Natalya is now a heel, she will find a heel way to win (by cheating) and Becky will want and get her rematch at Summer Slam with some sort of stipulation.
The G’s vs The Club
What bigger stamp of approval can you have as new arrivals than being put in a match with the “Face that runs the place?’ Enzo and Cass have transitioned to the main roster with ease and you can’t teach that. The fact that John Cena was one of the first main roster guys to give Enzo and Cass an endorsement way back in their NXT/FCW days makes this teaming all the more special. They go against Jeff’s favorite superstar AJ Styles and the Club. I’m gonna cut this short and say while this will be an exciting match, it isn’t the finish that has me excited. Cena and Company win but with the Club being split due to the draft….Enter the Demon! The Club kicks AJ to the curb and Finn makes his entrance. AJ will continue his feud with Cena on SmackDown, but The Balor Club rises from the ashes on RAW. Book it!
Winner: The G’s.
Remember how I said that KO and Jay Lethal were number one and number two on my list of current favorite wrestlers? Yeah, Cena and Styles are number one and number two also, except on my list of least liked wrestlers. No one was more happy to see both of them go to SmackDown than I was. Monday’s are for the A+ superstars and Tuesday’s are for the B+ superstars. The fact that the Club is being separated from Styles is also good news to me, now I can get behind them when Finn Balor takes over as their new leader. Enzo and Cass are just pure gold in everything that they do and Gallows and Anderson are great performers as well. Cena is Cena and Styles is Styles, there is a reason why they are here, while I do not like them, I never said they couldn’t wrestle. This match could possibly be a match of the night candidate, but I think KO and Zayn have that on lock. Either way, this will be an entertaining match between six people who are one of the best at what they do.
Winner: Enzo and Cass and the WWE Universe for getting Balor.
Sasha Banks & mystery partner vs Charlotte & Dana Brooke
The fact that the Women’s Title is not being defended…AGAIN is just dumb. Creative needs to realize that we want to see multiple story lines between the women wrestling to the best not just being catty every five minutes. This match should be a singles match between Sasha and Charlotte and it should be for the title. Dana Brooke can wrestle, she’s not great but she can. I feel she needs more time in NXT due to the fact that she looks super nervous and unsure of herself. While that doesn’t make her a dangerous worker it can lead to some dangerous spots. This business is all about trust and making sure that the person you are working with has your safety in mind. A nervous or unsure worker will lead to botched spots and opens the door for potential injuries. Rant over. If this match doesn’t feature Bayley as Sasha’s partner then expect lots of boos and bathroom breaks. The WWE universe is waiting with bated breath for Bayley to debut and even though the rumored plan is to have her on the main roster by September, we want her now. I think Sasha and partner go over only if it’s Bayley. If not, then expect Charlotte to win and Dana to awkwardly flex in the ring. Please, Please be Sasha and Bayley.
Winner: It depends.
Nia Jax. Lita. Bayley. All names that have been Wrumored to be Sasha’s tag partner tonight. We all want it to be Bayley so bad and that is what makes me think that Vince and co will not give us that. It looks as though they are going to make us wait until after Summer Slam to get her on the main roster. I call BS. I think this is all smoke being blown our way to go into tonight with the mindset to expect everyone but Bayley to be the partner. It will be Bayley, they will dominate Charlotte and Dana and we will all finally get Bayley on the main roster. I think having her be part of the NXT curtain call was telling enough to know that she is leaving NXT very soon. Shinsuke Nakamura may even be joining the main roster very soon too, well sooner than expected. Back to the match, Sasha and Bayley shool Charlotte and Dana and we all chant YES! YES! YES!
Winners: Sasha & Bayley.
WWE Championship match: The Dude (C) vs The Man vs The Guy
This is a three way match in which only two are relevant. The fact that this feud carried on despite Roman Reigns suspension is a testament to how stubborn creative and VKM are. The promos cut by Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins were gold and the way those two work together makes their matches fun to watch. If Roman Reigns was booed hard before, be ready for a huge nuclear level booing when his music hits. The fact that Rollins and Ambrose went 1 and 2 in the draft and are the headliners of their respective shows is telling. This should be a Rollins/Ambrose match. The promos Rollins cut were daggers and showed just how peeved WWE was with Reigns. We finally got serious Ambrose back and let’s be honest that is the best Ambrose. I don’t expect Reigns to win. I expect another Dusty finish with all Rollins and Ambrose having a claim to the title. Since the split happens after this PPV, Ambrose retains his WWE Championship an Rollins gets awarded the returning World Heavyweight Title. Reigns will battle Rollins for it and Ambrose will move on to headline Smackdown with John Cena. So that’s my call…a Dusty Finish.
Winner: A dusty finish, with Dean Ambrose retaining.
I was very surprised to see Roman still involved in this match and figured they would just take him out of the picture all together. The didn’t and here we are on the day of the event and Roman is still set to do battle with his former Shield brothers. As mentioned before, the boo’s are going to Reign (get it?) down heavily on Roman and maybe we will finally get to see him turn heel. Doubt it, but one can wish right? Unlike Joseph, I do not see a dusty finish happening and we will have a clear cut winner. Reigns will hit Ambrose with a Superman Punch and Spear, only to have Rollins step in at the last minute to steal the win. Rollins takes the tile with him to Raw and a new title (pictured below) will make its debut on SmackDown. You heard it here first.
Winner: Seth Rollins.
